A biographical drama depicting the life of B. Holly, a legendary musician who died at the young age of 22 in a plane crash. In 1956, in Lubbock, Texas. Holly and his band were criticized by the town for playing rock music on the radio, but they didn't waver in their dedication to music. However, a demo tape sent by a radio station executive happened to become a big hit in NY. The band members were invited to NY and signed a record deal. As the first white musicians to perform rock music, which was originally black music, at the Apollo Theater, they received a standing ovation from the black audience. With a tour with Sam Cooke and TV appearances, the band members rose to stardom. Holly married Maria, a secretary at the record company. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, but...
The story is only told from Holly's perspective, and social evaluations and other relationships are thin, but Gary Busey, who sings Holly's songs himself, is lighthearted and has a good rhythm, making it a worthwhile musical film. The final B. Holly medley is also enjoyable. Winner of the 51st Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and its Adaptation or Adaptation Score. Gary Busey was also nominated for Best Actor and won the National Society of Film Critics Award.
