NAKAMURA Hajime
(1912-1999) Born in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture in 1912. Died in 1999. Philosopher and religious studies scholar. Graduated from the Department of Indian Philosophy and Sanskrit Literature, Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University. Doctor of Literature. Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo. Member of the Japan Academy. Recipient of the Purple Ribbon Medal, the Order of Culture, and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure. Founded the Tōhō Kenkyūkai (now the Nakamura Hajime Oriental Institute) in 1970 and the Tōhō Gakuin in 1973. Served as Chairman of the Board and President of the Institute. Honorary President of the Comparative Thought Society. His publications include "The Collected Works of Hajime Nakamura [Definitive Edition]" in 40 volumes (Shunjusha), "Comprehensive Buddhist Dictionary" in 4 volumes (Tokyo Shoseki), and many others. The Hajime Nakamura Memorial Museum opened in Matsue City in 2012.
