American Studio Pottery Vase, signed Hugo?
Circa 1970s
This hand-thrown stoneware vase exemplifies the organic, fire-driven aesthetic of American studio pottery in the post-war era. Thrown in iron-rich clay, the vessel features a rounded body rising to a narrow, flared neck, accentuated by expressive dark iron and manganese banding beneath a warm ash glaze.

The base bears the incised signature “Hugo,” characteristic of independent American studio potters who often marked work with a single name rather than full signatures. Visible throwing rings inside the neck and an unglazed foot ring confirm wheel-thrown studio production.

The glaze surface displays natural kiln variation, speckling, and tonal depth, emphasizing the role of fire and process in the final form. The piece reflects the influence of the American studio pottery movement of the 1960s–1970s
