There are people who, from time to time, on TV discussions or in magazines, speak as if they understand what it means to be Japanese. I've never thought about what it means to be Japanese, and I have no idea what it's all about.
Of course, this "Sugata Sanshiro" should, in today's Japan, which is glued to television, give off a strong scent of being Japanese. Unfortunately, this is not the manga, but the novel "Sugata Sanshiro." I hope you will read that one.

Hiroshi Motomiya's "Sugata Sanshiro" is based on the novel "Sugata Sanshiro" by Tsuneo Tomita.
The novel "Sugata Sanshiro" was written by Tsuneo Tomita from the war years to the post-war period and became a hot topic as a judo novel. Shortly after the publication of the first part, it was made into a movie by Toho, and gained popularity as Akira Kurosawa's first directorial work. Denjiro Okochi as Yano Shogoro and Susumu Fujita as Sanshiro both became symbols of the times, and since then, it has been repeatedly adapted into movies, television, and theater. It can be said that its adaptation into a gekiga (graphic novel) was realized for the first time by Hiroshi Motomiya.
