Evergreen emerged from the ashes of Cinderblock, a legendary early '90s punk/hardcore band from Louisville, Kentucky.
In the early '90s, Evergreen was born from the ashes of Louisville's legendary band, Cinderblock. They went through so many member changes that Spinal Tap would blush, but their lineup solidified in 1993 with the addition of Britt Walford (Slint, The Breeders, The For Carnation) on drums.
Percussive guitars, a funky, undulating bass, and relentlessly catchy drumbeats meshed perfectly, elevating Sean McLaughlin's drunken vocals to unimaginable heights. Influenced equally by Fugazi, Television, and The Stooges, Evergreen's sound was like a breath of fresh air, understood only by the residents of Louisville at the time.
While the world was obsessed with soulless "faux-jazz," Evergreen unleashed roof-blowing party punk, creating a frenzy that nearly led to arrests for public indecency and noise pollution (a story for another time).
Recorded in vibrant stereophonic mid-fi by James Murphy (DFA), this work felt somewhat nostalgic upon its 1995 release. But strangely, in the present day, where soulless "faux-garage rock revivals" abound, it sounds more modern than ever.
Ultimately, if you strip away the extraneous information and let the music speak for itself, it's nearly impossible to guess when this album was made, and you don't need to care. This is a genuine, timeless masterpiece that has long deserved its due recognition.
