Kecak is a famous Balinese dance drama. Composed based on four rhythm patterns extracted from the rhythm analysis of Kecak.
These four rhythm patterns form a rhythmic hocket and flow through the piece as a rhythmic band.
The four players in charge of the rhythm patterns also vocalize "tjak, tjak, tjak...".
Behind them, Timpani and Tubular bells engage in a dramatic dialogue in a mode similar to an Indian Raga.
Commissioned by Percussion Group 72 in 1979 and premiered in the same year.
The following year, 1980, this work was submitted by NHK to the International Composers Conference in Paris and was selected as the best work.
Since then, it has been performed by percussion ensembles around the world.
