Contents:

Three years ago, when the concept for a commemorative exhibition celebrating the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth was first conceived, Franz Grieshofer, director of the Austrian Museum of Folk Art, envisioned an exhibition that would explore the backstage of Papageno's life and the world of bird catchers in nature and culture, using the character of Papageno as a starting point. This concept may have been brewing in Mr. Grieshofer's mind for some time. This is because Mr. Grieshofer is from the Salzkammergut region, where bird catching is still practiced, albeit occasionally, under strict nature conservation regulations, and is carefully preserved as a traditional cultural heritage. After 1945, it was quite natural to raise bullfinches, goldfinches, and siskins at home.

Like Papageno, whose content sometimes occupies a "middle ground," folklore is, in our opinion, ideal for interdisciplinary exploration of the bird catcher Papageno and his fragmented identity, the world of birds and humans, the musical world of birdsong, the capture and breeding of birds, and birds in tradition, myth, and (folk) art. We have requested the cooperation of researchers from various fields, including theater and music studies, history, empirical cultural studies, and ornithology, and their research results are incorporated into both the exhibition and the essays in this book. The second half of this book contains a catalog section edited by Franz Grieshofer, which almost exactly reproduces the exhibition chapters.
