・ This index selects and collects 3,509 works from various translated foreign picture books published in Japan between 1987 (Showa 62) and 2006 (Heisei 18), including baby books, books for learning letters and numbers, play books, poetry and song books, food books, pop-up books, science books, nonsense books, and picture books featuring TV and anime characters. It features masterpieces, folktales, stories depicting family and children's lives, Christmas stories, and stories about anthropomorphic animals such as dogs, cats, and bears, which often appear in picture books to make children's lives more relatable. The index includes the main characters (animals) appearing in these works.

・ Examples of characters included are: Joost from "Ojiichan Wasurenai yo," Trisha from "Arigato, Volker Sensei," Tessie from "Fure, Fure, Ame!," the white boy soldier Sheldon and the black boy Pinkus from "Kare no Te wa Kataritsugu," the green, brown, and purple ladies from a Swedish picture book, Itamar the boy from "T-shirt no Lion," Sori-chan the Korean girl, Tintin the young reporter, Tim the sailor, Angelica the world's biggest girl, Angelina the ballet-loving mouse girl, Winnie the Pooh, Willy the cowardly gorilla, Lisa and Gaspard, Toot and Puddle the pigs, Miffy the rabbit, the duck and goose from "Ugoicha Dame," Elmer the elephant, and Thomas the Tank Engine, totaling 7,020 main characters.
