Céline
Pen name. Born in Courbevoie, a city northwest of Paris, in 1894, he continued to study independently in poverty and obtained a medical license. He distinguished himself as a cavalry sergeant in World War I. After returning from the war, he worked at the United Nations Secretariat and traveled to various countries before opening a medical practice in a backstreet of Paris. In 1932, he established his fame as a writer with this book, but due to his anti-capitalist and anti-Semitic stance, and his collection of topical essays that denounced the current state of France, he was charged as a war criminal after World War II and imprisoned in Denmark, where he had fled. He returned to France under a pardon, but died in 1961, in poverty and misfortune, and only the word "No" was engraved on his tombstone.
