Mitch (A. Ladd), a former cavalryman seeking a new life, arrives in the town of Blue Springs. On the very day of his arrival, his beloved wife, who was pregnant and ill, dies due to the cold treatment from Sheriff Olson and the townspeople.
At the recommendation of Dr. Seltzer (L. Gates), who examined his wife, Mitch takes a job as Olson's assistant, but his heart burns with a desire for revenge. Eventually, Mitch fakes his own death during a horse thief pursuit, shoots and kills Olson along with the thief, and successfully takes over as sheriff, achieving his first act of revenge.
Then, Mitch secretly plans to plunder the town's resources and destroy it. He recruits Dan (D. Murray), a former Confederate lieutenant who is a drunk but skilled at painting and can make Molotov cocktails; Stu (B. Coe), a quick-draw expert; Harry (D. O'Herlihy), a stylish pickpocket; and Julie (D. Michaels), a saloon girl he hires as a second wife to deceive the townspeople.
Alan Ladd, who played the hero in the masterpiece "Shane," changes his image and portrays a man who has lost his heart and become a cold-blooded avenger due to resentment in this unique Western.
