Antique Staffordshire Trinket Box-Red Riding Hood. England. 19th century.
This is a beautiful Victorian Circa 1800’s Staffordshire Fairing Red Riding Hood and Wolf Trinket Box. The piece depicts Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf. Stands almost 4" tall, and is almost 3" wide at the base.
Excellent condition for it's age. Many of these little, lidded ceramic boxes were made during the Victorian era to be purchased at fairs – hence the name “fairing”.
Production of earthenware figures continued throughout Victoria's lifetime, but although they were still made after her death in 1901, few appear to have been produced after 1905.
Figure represents Little Red Riding Hood, who appeared in a French collection of fairy tales published by Charles Perrault in 1697 and translated into English in 1729. The tale was very popular in Europe.
