Born in Tokyo, 1913 - 1996
Known as a devout Christian (Protestant), he was a leading figure in stencil-printed woodblock prints. He studied the Bingata dyeing technique under Keisuke Serizawa, a leading Japanese textile artist, and in 1947, he applied this technique to create his first stencil-printed woodblock print, "The Book of Ruth," which won the Japan Folk Crafts Museum Award and the Kokuga Prize. Since then, he continued to express the world of the Bible through stencil-printed woodblock prints, and he was one of the leading artists representing contemporary Christian art in Japan.
