Released in 1968, Terry Riley's "In C" is a landmark work considered a cornerstone of minimalist music.

This piece is composed of 53 short musical fragments, with performers repeating each fragment any number of times and moving on to the next pattern at any time. Centered around a continuous C note played by the piano, called the "pulse," the addition of each instrument's performance creates a complex and beautiful tapestry of sound born from chance.

The greatest characteristic is that it doesn't follow a fixed score, but rather takes on a completely different expression each time it's performed. Its organic, kaleidoscopic sound lures listeners into a mesmerizing sonic space. This is a masterpiece that expanded the concept of music, having a great influence on later contemporary music, as well as ambient, electronic music, and post-rock.
