Dhokra is an ancient non–ferrous metal casting technique using the lost-wax method. Bastar bronzes are considered unique pieces of handmade folk art; since each piece is individually cast using a "waste mold" process, no two items are exactly alike.
The art is created using the ancient cire perdue or lost-wax casting method, a technique over 4,000 years old that was also found in the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilizations. The process involves skilled artisans molding the figure from beeswax strands, covering it in a clay and charcoal mixture, firing the mold to melt the wax, and then pouring a molten brass or bronze alloy into the resulting cavity.
