Antique Stereoscope & The Underwood Travel Library Jerusalem
The stereoscope, also known as a stereo viewer or stereopticon, is an optical instrument used to view two nearly identical images simultaneously to create a three-dimensional effect.
It is made of wood and has a hand grip and a sliding card holder. These devices were immensely popular between the 1850s and 1930s as a form of home entertainment, offering views of distant landscapes, historical events and everyday scenes.
The Underwood Travel Library Jerusalem stereoview is set in a book-shaped slipcase. These sets were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for viewing three-dimensional images through a stereoscope.
