Traveling Man Treasures is selling this Totonac terracotta clay head fragment in the Panuco style. The head fragment originates from the Gulf Coast region of Mexico, an area historically inhabited by the Totonac and Classic Veracruz cultures, and is dated to the Classic Period, roughly between 600 and 900 CE.

The head fragment displays characteristic features of the style, including an incised smiling mouth, a prominent nose, and large, flattened ear ornaments. The rounded and sloping forehead is reflective of a common Mesoamerican practice of intentional cranial modification during infancy.

DIMENSIONS: 4.5" H x 4.5" W x 2.5" D

The Panuco style is associated with the region around the Panuco River, a geographical area that overlaps with both the Huastec and Totonac styles encompassed within the Classic Veracruz cultural diaspora.
