Vintage 1960’s Hand Made, Hand Painted “Chicken or Rooster Pitcher.” 9.5” tall, 3.5” by 3.25” dimensions at bottom of pitcher (an egg configuration), and the top opening is 5” long, 3” wide. Beak opening is 3/8” (small). Weighs 2.5 lbs. Before Williams Sonoma copied this Italian style chicken pitcher, Northern Italians have been making and buying these festive pitchers as household good luck charms. Folklore says that a feud between the Medici and Pazzi families led to the Pazzis attempted ambush on the Medici compound, which was interrupted by the cackling of yard chickens and roosters acting as “guard dogs”, making so much noise at the strangers’ approach, waking up the Medicis’ bodyguards, saving the day. Traditionally, Italians give these handmade glazed and painted ceramic Chicken Pitches as house warming gifts (to guard over the home like what happened in the Medicis’ yard).
