Sargent only held two major watercolor exhibitions in the United States during his lifetime. The first exhibition in 1909 was entirely purchased by the Brooklyn Museum. The paintings exhibited in the other exhibition in 1912 were bought up by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. "John Singer Sargent Watercolors" reunites approximately 100 works from these collections for the first time, organized by theme and subject (sunlight on stone, figures lying on grass, patterns of light and shadow). Enhanced by biographical and technical essays, and lavishly illustrated with 175 color reproductions, this publication introduces readers to the overall picture of Sargent's achievements in this medium, providing visual enjoyment and challenging the understanding of this amazingly talented artist in a collection of paintings.
